As moms, we share many experiences that bring us together: feeling helpless when our baby won’t stop crying, being exhausted from lack of sleep, feeling isolated, and having moments of endless tears. We constantly question ourselves, doubting our innate maternal abilities and fearing judgment from others. The weight of responsibility and the anxiety of making the right choices for our children weigh heavily on our hearts. The challenges persist, from choosing the right childcare to grappling with our evolving identities. Returning to work after a mere 12 weeks, struggling with our partner’s lack of understanding, dealing with post-baby weight, and navigating the complexities of postpartum—all these trials are endured out of our unwavering love for our children. It is the boundless love of mothers that fuels the thriving of this world. Every mother deserves inspiration and encouragement, and I hope you discover it within these words.

Acquilla Kou,

My name is Acquilla Kou. I am a proud mommy of a vibrant little girl. I was born in Liberia, West Africa, but raised in Houston, TX. I was nine years old when my father earned the opportunity to migrate his family to the United States in hopes of giving his children a better chance in life and the “American Dream.”

I achieved my bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University in Psychology. Currently, I am in the Marriage and Family Therapy graduate program at Lamar University, working towards a master’s degree. I have over 10 years of experience working with adults and children with developmental/mental disabilities. And 11 years of experience investigating child abuse and neglect. I have worked with different organizations and formed professional connections with local women’s shelters, law enforcement, CASA, family court, schools, and other community stakeholders..

Becoming a mum inspired me to create the special project, Maternal Journey, which is our biggest focus on this platform. I wrote about my experience and wanted to give every mum the prospect of writing about theirs.

My hobbies include meditating, spending time with my daughter, and looking for ways to enrich myself. I pride myself on putting Jehovah God first, being open to learning, and showing appreciation for others no matter what..

Hey Mamas, my name is Brittany James, an editor. I’m a new wife and a soon-to-be first-time mama! I was born and raised in Houston, TX but recently moved to the west coast- California. It’s so amazing how God works because I always wanted to live here as a kid.

I’m a self-published author of Twenty Something, where I share poetry written in my 20s. I’m currently working on book #2, so get ready, get ready! I’m excited about being a part of Maternal Ark because every mama deserves her story to be heard and supported.

My hobbies include journaling, watching my favorite TV shows, cooking with my husband, and being in the sun. I am a strong woman of faith! I believe all things are possible with God if we just believe in His promises.

Aleita Leverston, Marketing Specialist

I am Aleita Leverston, a proud wife, mother to a wonderful son, educator, and creative personality. Originally from Houston, TX, I now call Louisiana my home. It’s a place I never imagined I’d find myself, but it’s growing on me, even though I’ll always be a Texas girl at heart.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and my Master’s in Instructional Leadership at Sam Houston State University. From a young age, I had a passion for social work and education. My mom recognized my natural affinity for working with kids, and I decided to pursue that path wholeheartedly. Working with children constantly reminds me to keep life fun, stay imaginative, and never stop learning because our quality of life depends on it.

Becoming a mother has been a transformative experience beyond my wildest dreams. It has made me bolder, more courageous, more intentional, and it has opened up a whole new dimension of love that I never knew existed. I absolutely love this journey.

I’m thrilled to embark on this new season as the Marketing Specialist at Maternal Ark. Whether you’re expecting, adopting, or navigating the postpartum phase, we want to hear and share your unique story.

Outside of work, my hobbies revolve around my precious little family. We enjoy spending quality time together and watching our favorite shows, and I’m an avid creator of video diaries for my YouTube channel. I’m also passionate about encouraging those around me. As the daughter of the Most High God and a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ, I firmly believe that it’s never too late or too far from God to live a transformative and abundant life.
